The top 80s music hits were mostly in response to the death of the 70s disco era. The 80s saw the rise of Modern Rock and what is now known as Alternative Rock. Bands like Blondie, R.E.M., the Psychelic Furs, Level 42, the Knack (remember them?), and others led the way with synth-heavy melodies and subversive lyrics. Foreigner led the way among the glam arena bands and were followed by such super groups as REO Speedwagon, Aerosmith, Journey, and Genesis. Pop and soul acts dominated among 80s music hits with groups such as the Spinners, Kool & The Gang, Prince, and Madonna. New Jersey rock and roll working class hero Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band landed their phenomenal international super hit album "Born in the USA". But the biggest selling band was U2 with their great iconic album "Joshua Tree" leading the way.

Solo artists were big and Madonna led the way among female singers with no less than 14 huge Billboard hits, 4 of those squarely in the top 10. The late great Michael Jackson had 10 super hits with 3 in the top ten. His biggest selling album was "Thriller" produced by Quincy Jones. The charismatic and mysterious Prince who later changed his name to "the Artist formerly known as Prince" scored big with 9 huge Billboard 80s music hits. Rounding out this list is Sade (Smooth Operator), Bruce "The Boss" Springsteen (Dancing in the Dark), Sheena Easton (Sugar Walls), Pat Benatar, Whitney Houston (I Will Always Love You), Gloria Estefan (Bad Girls), Bobbi Brown, and Kenny Loggins.

Bon Jovi had a huge decade with 80s music hits such as "You Give Love a Bad Name" and "Living on a Prayer". Their blend of pop and rock earned them loyal fans and they can still fill stadiums to this day. Guns ‘n Roses featuring the vocal brilliance of Axl Rose and the phenomenal guitar leads of Slash found themselves on top of the music world with their incredible international hit "Sweet Child of Mine", one of the most memorable songs ever produced in the rock genre.

U2 kept up with 80s music hits such as "Pride in the Name of Love", "Where the Streets Have No Name", "With or Without You", "New Years Day", and "I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For". Bono was the ultimate front man and guitarist The Edge proved to be a brilliant songwriter and arranger.

Kool & The Gang gave us such funky hits as "Jungle Boogie" and "Hollywood Swingin’". Culture Club and their cross-dressing front man (woman?) Boy George produced several smash hits such as "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?" and "Karma Chameleon". The Pointer Sisters had 4 80s music hits including "I’m So Excited". All in all, the 80s gave us quite a bit of wonderful musical memories.
